The Lux-Bond Method

Most liner companies utilize a black butyl tape to bond the liner to the existing tub. It’s quick and easy to obtain materials. Unfortunately, butyl tape is only water-resistant rather than waterproof. If water were ever to get between the liner and the tub, the butyl will lose all of its bond strength and slowly dissolve into a black slimy mess. This is what the industry refers to as a “floater”. The bottom of the liner lifts away and floats in a bed of slimy goo and feels much like trying to walk on a water bed. For this reason the liner is usually installed last to make it easier to remove once it fails.

The Lux-bond method uses no butyl tape at any point in its construction. All the materials below the liner are completely waterproof. Lux-bond is a liquid adhesive that hardens to a finish that makes the liner solid like a normal steel or cast iron tub. What was once the weakest part of the installation is now the strongest. Because of this, the liner is installed before the walls like a traditional bathtub. The butyl method that so many liner companies use has at most three seals that prevent water from getting below the liner. The Lux-bond method on the other hand, has six seals to prevent water intrusion. This represents a much more secure installation technology.
